What does a battery management system offer?

Intelligent battery management systems (BMS) offer a variety of functions that significantly improve the performance, safety and user-friendliness of batteries. Here are the main benefits in detail:

Security

Intelligent BMS systems monitor current, cell voltage and cell temperature and disconnect the electrical connection to the battery cells as soon as their permissible operating conditions are exceeded. For this purpose, they have dual protection through reversible and irreversible cut-off devices. The reversible part is usually designed as a FET or relay, while chemical fuses are often used for the irreversible part. This prevents the battery from being overcharged or deeply discharged, but also prevents the battery from being damaged in the event of a short circuit.

Reliability

A BMS ensures the longevity and reliability of the battery through:

  • The best quality circuit boards and components: High-quality materials and precise workmanship ensure a long battery life.
  • Cell balancing: This function balances the charge between the individual cells of the battery in order to make optimum use of the capacity and extend the service life of the battery. This prevents uneven charge distribution, which improves the efficiency and durability of the entire battery system.

Comfort

A BMS offers several convenient functions that simplify battery operation:

  • Integrated charge controller: this eliminates the need for a separate charger and makes charging the battery easier and more efficient.
  • BUS system for simple data readout: Data can be easily read out and monitored via a BUS system. This facilitates integration into existing systems and enables efficient monitoring and control.
  • Gas gauging: This technology enables the precise determination of the application-specific total and remaining capacity of the battery. This allows the user to view the state of charge and remaining capacity at any time, making operation safer and easier to plan.
